We can't pick up the newspaper or turn on the news without being bombarded with information about the economy. It seems like  everything is about the accumulation, spending or hoarding of money. I'm guilty of this obsession. I find myself fretting over my Guidestone (retirement) funds. I think about how I'm going to pay for car or house repairs. I worry about my grandkids college education and ability to own their own homes someday. Some of this is natural and appropriate, but oftentimes I go too far. Financial planning becomes financial worry. This is wrong.

As I've reflected on this dilemma, I've been thinking about true wealth. I've intentionally taken some time to honestly assess how rich I truly am. In fact, as I've reflected on this, I've realized I am a multi-millionaire. No, I'm a billionaire and more!

At the conclusion of the Parable of the Rich Fool in Luke 12, Jesus says, "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God." Jesus followed this up with the admonition not to worry. He said "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life." That's what I want. I want to be rich toward God and not worry about earthly riches. Actually, I am rich toward God. I just need to realize it. And celebrate it! Let me share some of the ways I'm rich. These are the ways I need to truly measure my wealth.

Salvation. In 2 Corinthians 8, Paul told us that Jesus became poor so we might be rich. God humbled Himself and became a person of no means so He could give us the gift of Salvation. With that gift we have unimaginable wealth. This is a wealth we didn't earn and it can't be taken away. A wealth that is not dependent on the stock market, an employer or any government entity. It has already been purchased and given. I'm rich!

Family. A few weeks ago, Robbi and I returned from Alaska where our daughter gave birth to a beautiful granddaughter. She weighed 8 lbs. 8 oz. and I've got pictures. It was this event that caused me to assess my true wealth. Robbi and I now have five terrific grandchildren. What a blessing. I'm rich!

Calling and Ministry. I'm blessed beyond measure to be the DOM of the GCBA. God's call and leadership to this position is a privilege. Each day I'm honored to be a part of God's great work in the lives of Greene County Pastors and the ministry of Greene County Churches. There is nothing more invigorating than knowing I am right where God wants me doing exactly what He wants me to do. I'm rich!

Christian Friends. As I think about the friends and Christian family the Lord has given me, I am humbled. I have great pastors, deacons, staff and church members who surround me who are encouraging, supportive and fun. Each day I'm thrilled to connect with people who love me and build me up. It's been said that a person is truly rich if they have two or three good friends throughout their lives. I've got scores. I'm rich!

I could go on and on, but you get the idea. I am truly rich. Regardless of what happens to my Guidestone funds, I'm wealthy. Robbi and I were talking about this the other day and we agreed we hope the Lord leaves us here on earth for many years. But, if He decides to take us soon, we would die with smiles on our faces and the assurance that we died  fulfilling His will and with true wealth!

M.R.I. Update

Please pray for our churches that are engaged in the MRI (Making Renewal Intentional) process. They are:

Cedar Bluff - Pastor Ray Roach

Liberty - Pastor Larry Ball

Hamlin Memorial - Pastor Pat Findley

We have one new church that has asked to participate in MRI, Glenstone - Pastor Doug Irvin. They will be starting the process soon. Finally, our first Spanish-speaking congregation, Casa de Oracion, Pastor Hazael Gonzalez, is considering doing MRI.

Pray with me that God will bless these churches as they seek His will in shaping their future ministries.
